This former landfill now offers a range of attractive trails, mostly surrounding a steep hill in the center. The path around the grassy hill is wide, level gravel–an easy grade and surface, accessible to many wheelchairs. The smooth, packed dirt path over the hill is steep at the north end. Moderately sloping trails through woods and wetlands are uneven and crisscrossed by tree roots. Open dawn to dusk.

The main trailhead is located on the north side of ME Route 9/Ocean Avenue near the Presumpscot Street intersection, where a large parking area is available. The trail network can also be accessed from neighborhood streets, including Ray Street, Beauregard Drive, at the intersection of Virginia Street and Maine Avenue, on Charlotte Drive off Ledgewood Drive, and on Copley Woods Circle off Huntington Avenue.

The park is owned and managed by the City of Portland, with assistance from Portland Trails. The Quarry Run Dog Park is a popular part Ocean Avenue Recreation Area–a ten-acre off-leash park where dogs can run free.
